Baby Blues
08/02/08 @ 08:25:07 pm, Categories: Thriller, 228 words   English (CA)

Baby Blues is a dark tale of insanity based on real events. Colleen Porch plays the role of a mother affected with postpartum depression after the birth of her new child.

Living on an isolated farm, married to a truck driver who is away from home often, we watch as the mother begins to exhibit increasingly irrational behavior. It is frightening to watch this woman slowly slipping into madness and when the oldest boy finds the baby dead we know the mother is responsible.

At this turning point the mother slips into total madness and decides all of her children must die. The oldest boy finds his mother trying to drown his sister in the bathtub, hits mother in the head and rescues his sister.

She brutally murders the youngest boy as the oldest boy and his sister watch. As the now frantically insane mother chases her remaining children with murderous intent, the boy strives to protect his sister and himself from his insane mother.

The fact that horrible things like this really do happen, and the totally believable portrayal of a good mother gone insane makes for a thrill-packed suspenseful film that every horror fan will enjoy.

Some graphic violence and a definitely disturbing theme creates a film that is not for the faint of heart. Baby Blues is one of the best thrillers I have seen.

Dr. Jekyl And Mr. Hyde (2008)

Well, I certainly was not expecting much from a made for tv adaptation of this film. And I got much less than I expected. As a Horror movie it fails miserably, but as a courtroom drama it is not too bad. I guess the whole court thing was kind of interesting but that is not really what the story is supposed to be about.

The evil of Mr. Hyde is portrayed very poorly. There is no blood, No gore, violence that is only hinted at. Really nothing to keep a horror fan interested.

The actor who played Jekyl/Hyde was not interesting to me at all. He was kinda believable as the doctor, but not at all as mr. Hyde. I do have to say that I enjoyed the lawyer’s role…

A bit of a twist ending, but you could see it coming fifteen minutes before it happened so that is not a redeeming feature of this film either.

I would have to say that unless you really have absolutely nothing else to do, you should not waste your time watching this awful movie.

Solstice
07/07/08 @ 05:42:05 pm, Categories: Horror, 102 words   English (CA)

Nothing really original about this movie. A group of teenagers spend the solstice weekend in the family summer home. One of the girls begins to realize that the spirit of her sister who committed suicide a year ago is trying to tell her something.

So basically this is a ghost story without any chills or suspense. Very predictable throughout - there are no real surprises here. And the “spirit” has to be the worst effect I have ever seen in a ghost story.

I really can’t think of much to say about “Solstice” other than I felt it really was not worth watching.

The Ruins

Just finished watching “The Ruins” and I can only say that it was Awesome. I’ve had the chance to see this movie a few times up till today I have passed on it cause it just did not sound that interesting.

A group of tourists explore an archaeological dig while vacationing in Mexico and find that something evil lurks in the ruins.

Although the story is not incredibly original, the acting is top-notch. Character development draws you into believing in the characters and their actions and responses.

The low-key soundtrack adds to the creepiness of this film. The background music creatively enhances the mood of suspense, while not detracting from the story in any way.

There are some truly gruesome scenes and a couple of times I had to look away. Not senseless gore, but gruesome events that make you feel empathy for the people it is happening to.

I have to say this is one of the best movies I have seen this year. I am sure I will enjoy watching it a second (third…) time! If you get the chance to see this movie do not pass it by as it is a true gem!

The Signal
06/22/08 @ 08:35:42 pm, Categories: Horror, 171 words   English (CA)

A signal transmitted through tvs and radios turns everyday people into psychotic killers. Of course there are a few people who are not affected by this mysterious signal and the story unfolds through the eyes of these “survivors".

The three main characters are part of a love triangle. A woman, her lover and her boyfriend. The three main characters fight through the chaos trying to find each other.

The story bounces around between the “adventures” of these three people, and though I usually do not like this type of filming, it seemed to work very well in this movie.

There are some good gore scenes and an element of suspense through the entire movie. It is cool that even the “unaffected” people still begin to act less sane as the pressures of the situation work on them.

The actors are very believable in their roles and throughout there is an underlying dark humour that balances the gore and terror. The Signal is a movie that I will definitely enjoy watching again!
